Dr. Hsu Bio

Benson Hsu’s research interests revolve around examining inconsistencies in the United States’ system of health care finance. Specifically, he explores topics that challenge our view of what is “right” or “correct” in how we distribute our limited financial resources. The goal of his research is to identify novel ways to improve the value in health care delivery.

Behind the research

With rapidly increasing health care spending within our country’s health care system, all aspects of care delivery are under scrutiny. Although the U.S., as a nation, spends the most in health care, health outcomes are often not aligned with the amount of spending incurred by the health care system.

In recent years, there has been a move to reform the existing health care finance structure. Instead of a historic fee-for-service model, there has been a move toward a value-based system. In comparison to a fee-based system focused on volume and cost containment, the value-based system is more focused on the quality of care delivered as a relationship of costs to care.

Dr. Hsu’s research targets how health care dollars and resources are utilized in comparison to health outcomes. He challenges established thinking and assumptions of health care value.

Examples of recent research projects in Dr. Hsu’s lab include:

  • Impact of rural versus urban care on the costs and outcomes of bronchiolitis
  • Impact of teaching hospitals on the clinical outcome and costs of sepsis
  • Impact of institutional volume on the outcome of pediatric ECMO cases
  • Impact of socioeconomic status on costs and outcome of pediatric asthma
  • Impact of payer types on costs of care for pediatric oncology and cardiology inpatients
