Patricia Crotwell

Dr. Patricia Crotwell is a Board-Certified Clinical Cytogeneticist and a Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics.  She is the Director of the Sanford Clinic USD Genetics Laboratory and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Sanford School of Medicine, University of South Dakota.  The Sanford Clinic USD Genetics Lab in Sioux Falls is a clinical diagnostic laboratory that provides comprehensive cytogenetic services including prenatal cytogenetic analysis (amniocentesis, chorionic villi, product of conception), postnatal blood and/or tissue analysis, oncology bone marrow analysis, solid tumor (variable) analysis, Fluorescence in situ Hybridization (FISH) analysis, and postnatal array comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) using the Affymetrix Cytogenetics Whole Genome Array.  Indications for cytogenetic testing include known or suspected chromosome abnormalities, delayed growth and psychomotor development, abnormal or unusual physical features, congenital anomalies, major or minor, abnormal sexual development, seizures or neurological dysfunction, a history of three or more miscarriages, history of a stillborn child, a child or children with a genetic disorder or birth defect, a positive family history of a genetic disorder, and in certain cases, metabolic disorders, muscular weakness, exposure to potential teratogenic agents, marriage to a relative, or anxieties about childbearing.  Dr. Crotwell is interested in all aspects of human medical genetics, particularly micro-deletion and micro-duplication syndromes.  Research projects in development in the laboratory include baseline studies of long continuous stretches of homozygosity in reproductively isolated groups such as the Hutterite Colonies of the High Plains, and determining if the underlying cause of seizures in children is genetic; specifically, gains or losses of DNA.
