Bill Harris
Dr. Harris’s research focus has been on the role of omega-3 fatty acids in cardiovascular disease. Much of his career was spent in examining the effects of fish oil on human lipid and lipoprotein metabolism, but over the last 7 years he has begun to examine the potential prognostic role of low blood omega-3 fatty acid levels in human disease. To that end he developed the HS-Omega-3 Index®, a measure of tissue omega-3 status, based on the amount of EPA and DHA in red blood cell membranes. He founded OmegaQuant, LLC in 2009 to provide standardized testing services to researchers and clinicians. In addition to his work with OmegaQuant, in June 2011 he assumed the position of Senior Scientist with Health Diagnostic Laboratory, Richmond, VA, in order to introduce RBC fatty acid testing into routine clinical medicine. He continues to collaborate on research projects with scientists at Sanford Research/USD, and retains an appointment in the Department of Medicine at the Sanford School of Medicine, USD as a Research Professor.
