William S. Harris, PhD

Sanford Research William HarrisDr. Harris holds a PhD in human nutrition from the University of Minnesota. Since 1980, his research has focused primarily on omega-3 fatty acids and cardiovascular disease. He has been the principal investigator on 5 omega-3 related NIH grants and currently has over 150 omega-3 related publications. Clinical (as opposed to basic) research has been his specialty, and since 2004, when he developed a new blood test for omega-3 (the omega-3 index), he has been involved with epidemiological studies, all asking the question, “is the omega-3 index a biomarker of clinically-significant prognostic value?” He continues to collaborate with researchers around the globe on fatty acid-based studies, from the relationships between breast milk DHA levels and response to the polio vaccine in Bangladeshi children, to the predictive value of red blood cell omega-3 levels in the development of Alzheimer’s disease in the Framingham study.

He is currently a Professor of Medicine at the Sanford School of Medicine, University of South Dakota in Sioux Falls. In addition he is the President of OmegaQuant Analytics, LLC (Sioux Falls) and a Senior Research Scientist at Health Diagnostic Lab, Inc. (Richmond, VA). He lives in Sioux Falls, SD.
