Research Interests and Expertise
Dr. Griese’s research works to uncover heterogeneity in developmental trajectories from childhood to early adolescence, focusing primarily on sources of resilience among at-risk youth. She further has extensive expertise in advanced longitudinal data analysis including latent growth mixture modeling and various other Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) techniques.
Dr. Griese also leads the Sanford Data Collaborative, supporting population health focused research with the goal of translation to community and patient health improvement and innovation.
Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes in the Northern Plains Safe Passage Study Cohort

Our cohort will follow a group of participants recruited for the Safe Passage Study, an existing cohort with prenatal exposure and early childhood outcomes data. The entire ECHO Pediatric Cohort has a goal of enrolling more than more than 50,000 children from diverse racial, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our site is responsible for monitoring around 4,400 children from the Sioux Falls and Rapid City areas, including a large percentage of rural and American Indian youth. Experiences during sensitive developmental windows, including around the time of conception, later in pregnancy, and during infancy and early childhood, can have long-lasting effects on the health of children. ECHO research will focus on factors that may influence health outcomes around the time of birth as well as into later childhood and adolescence, including upper and lower airway health and development, obesity, and brain and nervous system development.

Supporting Male Victims of Violence
Griese (Evaluation Director)
This is a tribally-based project focusing on male survivors of victimization, including sexual, physical, and emotional trauma to male youth between the ages of 10-18 years. The goal of this project is to successfully implement and evaluate the effectiveness of an evidence-based model that provides trauma informed, comprehensive services for males

21st Century Learning Grants – Volunteers of America-Dakotas, Bowden Youth Center
These are community-based program working to support social and academic skills, including a focus specifically on STEM learning among low income and non-native English speakers through an afterschool program.

March 2017 Emily Griese, PhD, and DenYelle Kenyon, PhD, published a research article in the Journal for Diversity in Higher Education. By assessing the mentor-mentee relationship of participants in the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) at Sanford Research, this study found that mentor beliefs impact student learning outcomes which underscores the important role of mentors for American Indian undergraduates."A research experience for American Indian undergraduates: Utilizing an actor-partner interdependence model to examine the student-mentor dyad".
February 2017, Emily Griese, PhD, presented an invited workshop to students and faculty of the Center for Brain and Behavior Research. The title of her workshop was "Childhood Trajectories of Risk and Resilience: Considering Context and Culture"
August 2016, Dr. Griese, Dr. Kenyon and Tracey McMahons had a paper published in American Indian and Alaska Native Metnal Health Research.The paper was titled, "Identifying Sexual Health Protective Factors among Northern Plains American Indian Youth: An Ecological Approach Utilizing Multiple Perspectives". Findings indicated that family, school, and culture were important sources of resilience, providing a better understanding of how various systems may buffer AI youth from involvement in risky sexual behavior.
August 2016, Dr. Griese presented her study, Impact of Residential Treatment on Maternal-Child Health, as part of the CRCAIH pilot grants presentation series.
August 2016, Dr. Griese attended the American Psychological Association conference in Denver, CO. She presented her pilot grant data on maternal-child outcomes post substance abuse treatment.
